Our History

Shepard Niles was founded in 1878, and we built our first crane around 1902. Since then, the name Shepard Niles has come to mean unrelenting quality, reliability and long life in material handling. Workhorse cranes and hoists that last virtually forever– this is what industry expects from Shepard Niles. Our custom hand-built, heavy-duty Class D and E cranes and hoists helped America become the world's leading industrial nation, and powered our country through two World Wars.

Today's Shepard Niles

Here at Shepard Niles, we have a tradition of doing things right. We are as committed today as we were 130 years ago to supplying our customers with some of the toughest heavy-duty Class H4 and H5 hoists and hot metal hoists around. It’s common knowledge in the lifting industry that Shepard Niles equipment lasts ‘practically forever.’ To keep it that way, we offer only genuine OEM replacement parts for every Shepard Niles crane and hoist ever sold. We have an extensive inventory that ensures that we can ship most of the standard replacement parts in 1 to 3 days. We also provide our customers with the best service and product warranty available anywhere.

We'd like all of our customers to know that after 130 years, we're still here in Montour Falls, still supplying new Shepard Niles Lifting equipment, OEM quality replacement parts, and complete rebuild services for any Shepard Niles crane or hoist ever built.

“Do you remember the old adage: ‘they just don’t build them like they used to?’
That pretty much sums up our assessment of this crane. This unit is very heavy-duty– Shepard Niles has always been known in the industry
for building a ‘Cadillac’ product. Very few modern-design hoists being built today that are half the weight and size of this unit would still be operating after 87 years. This crane has been in continuous use for more than half the life of our company, and is still a critical piece of equipment for us.”
